Endoprosthesis- Distal and Proximal Femoral Replacement
An endoprosthesis is an implanted prosthetic device used to replace damaged or diseased sections of bone typically following trauma, tumor resection, or severe degenerative conditions. Endoprosthetic reconstruction can be performed for proximal and distal replacement of the femur or thighbone, the longest bone in the body. The proximal part of the femur is the portion near the hip while the distal part is near the knee.
Proximal Femur Replacement: This involves replacing the upper portion of the femur, usually in cases of bone cancer or hip fractures that cannot be repaired. The prosthetic device restores hip function, connecting to the remaining healthy bone and often integrating with a hip joint replacement.
Distal Femur Replacement: This is typically performed when the lower portion of the femur, near the knee, is damaged or removed, often due to tumors or complex fractures. The prosthesis includes a replacement for the knee joint, providing stability and allowing for movement.
